Mariachi Girl is a bilingual musical about a young girl’s dream of following in her father’s footsteps to become a Mariachi, but her dream runs counter to his traditional, patriarchal roots. Told through the eyes of a young girl, the musical explores cultural stereotypes and assimilation in the U.S. It is a heartwarming story that celebrates cultural identity and promotes a positive self-image for young women.
Introducing Eileen San Juan
Eileen San Juan is a 13 year old young lady and the daughter of Irma Rosario, a hard working farmworker. Eileen's mom enrolled her in the Inlakech Cultural Arts Center at the age of 5 years with aspirations of learning to play the guitar, followed by the accordion, the violin and eventually the guitarrón. She has flourished as an accomplished folklorico dancer and singer. Eileen plays a key role in the Inlakech Cultural Arts Center’s mariachi and folklorico program. Eileen is extremely bright and intelligent, who continues to exhibit herself academically as a 4.0 Honor’s Scholar both at the Inlakech Center and in her school, R.J. Frank Academy in Oxnard, CA. Eileen embodies the mission of Mariachi Girl, who breaks the gender barrier, who dreams the impossible dream and creates a new reality with pride and dignity.
